Introduction to Inductive Maintenance-Free Torque Measurement on Rotating Shafts for Everyone – Plug & Play Kit with Weldable Strain Gauges and App Configuration
- Now also available in the MANNER Webshop -
As a long-standing expert and inventor of inductive sensor telemetry, MANNER has developed the OptiMA evaluation unit as a convenient solution for continuous measurement operation. MANNER OptiMA, together with the new generation of sensor signal amplifiers and their automatic antenna tuning function, offers a maintenance-free Plug & Play measurement system for physical quantities such as torque, temperature, and vibrations on rotating parts.
The system differs from all previous market systems due to its enormous range of 40 to 50 mm distance from the rotating sensor. The system’s supply voltage of 10-30V also provides enormous flexibility in use.
The system works with all single-channel and dual-channel measurement amplifier models from MANNER in the range of 0.1 to 10 kHz, thus supporting very dynamic measurements. The antenna configuration is also very flexible as usual. In addition to the wound antenna with minimal installation height, both an end-of-shaft version with integrated sensor signal amplifier and a ring antenna with integrated sensor signal amplifier for reuse can be applied. Both radial and end-of-shaft pickup are easily possible.
The Strain Gauge Application
We also offer our customers a comprehensive concept for the strain gauge application. Strain gauges with pre-connected cables as a kit or weldable strain gauges using micro-welding technology are possible. For the latter, the portable micro-welding device can be rented for one-time application. The micro-welding technology is proven and has no impact on the strength of the torque-receiving part.
The system itself consists of the strain gauge for torque measurement, the sensor signal amplifier, and the OptiMA evaluation unit. Depending on the installation environment, the desired sensor signal amplifier can be flexibly chosen as an end-of-shaft version or applied on the shaft with a rotor antenna kit.
Utilization of Measurement Data with the OPTIMA Evaluation Unit – Analog and Digital
In addition to the usual voltage output 0…+/-10V, a current output (4…20 mA) as well as digital outputs CAN and Ethernet are available.
Commissioning
The inductively powered measurement technology – sensor and measurement amplifier – automatically adjusts to the system environment optimally at each start. This ensures the transmission path is re-optimized with each start, ensuring robust transmission. All inductive MANNER systems – including OptiMA – operate without batteries or accumulators, making them completely maintenance-free. Troublesome and heavy batteries, along with associated imbalance problems and their replacement, are not necessary.
Thus, the rotor setup is a breeze. Three LEDs clearly indicate the system status and guide the user.
The system can be used directly and further configured (“sensor name; sample rate; information storage” etc.) and calibrated (zero-point and gain settings) using either the MANNER “Telemetry Interface” software or the integrated MANNER Smart Interface and the MANNER App (compatible with Android, tablet, and iPhone).
The MANNER Smart Interface, in conjunction with the MANNER App, enables the user to check measurement data or other important parameters such as supply voltage, temperature, or sensor check, wirelessly. No additional components are required for this – the size of the telemetry and evaluation unit remains the same.
The focus of the development was on simple connectivity. For easy search or reconnection, the QR code of the desired measurement device can be scanned, establishing the connection immediately. Each measurement application can be assigned a name to switch between multiple applications without confusion. Previous connections in the vicinity are displayed without needing to scan again, making reconnection even simpler.
The capabilities of the MANNER App are comprehensive. All configuration parameters of the sensor, such as the measurement range setting, the zero point, or general health data such as power supply, can be conveniently set and saved for documentation. Especially for field applications where antenna positions may shift after installation, a glance at the smartphone is sufficient to check the power supply for successful measurement. The easy adjustment of the measurement range is now possible in field tests. For example, in side shaft applications, the measurement range resolution can be adjusted based on the test scenario. Thus, your application can be realized for multiple measurement ranges with easy switching!
During use, data can be viewed live in the oscilloscope of the app, analyzed, and visualized. These analyses can be recorded for later review.

Innovative and World-Class Support
The app is an innovative solution that makes the daily use of sensor telemetry more comfortable. It also greatly facilitates the support of applications worldwide. Anyone can download the app from the App Store and thus forward the system status to a measurement technician. This alone can significantly reduce potential maintenance operations, travel costs, and expensive downtime costs.
